Sometimes complaints can occur acutely, such as muscle tears, broken bones, sprains of the knee or ankle or after a dislocated joint. Or they can be the result of long-term overuse, such as tendon problems. But also after surgery you can visit the sport physio, so you can return to sport as soon as possible.

What can you visit the sports physio for?

”I went to Ron with knee problems for a second opinion. The physio at my soccer club told me to rest for months, but Ron helped me get rid of the problems in one treatment and exercises at home. Been a big fan of his knowledge and treatment methods ever since!”

What is sports physical therapy?

Unlike a general physical therapist, a sports physical therapist has completed a 3-year master’s degree in sports physical therapy.

Sports physical therapists have complementary skills to promote safe participation in physical activities, provide patients with advice on (adaptation) of rehabilitation and training interventions with the goal of preventing injury, maximizing recovery and contributing to improving athletic performance of athletes.

This can include children, young adults and the elderly, who are hindered from playing their sports or activities. This can be at the recreational, competition level, but can also be at the professional / elite sports level or paratop sports

intake

After a screening, your first appointment consists of an anamnesis, or an interview, and a physical examination. In the anamnesis, the sports physical therapist asks questions about the symptoms; for example, their origins and at what movements or moments the symptoms worsen or diminish. In addition to general questions to clearly identify symptoms, specific questions are asked about you as an athlete, how often you play sports, what intensity, injury history, sports history and sports goals.

After this, the examination will take place. This is done through a physical examination, where the sports physical therapist will perform tests to identify the symptoms, but may also include a movement analysis of the sport. This involves not only looking at what the symptoms are, but also an analysis of what is causing or maintaining the symptoms.

Treatment

The goal of treatment is to return to the desired level of functioning and/or athletic level. This involves looking at the influence of exercise in functioning, symptoms and sports. As a result, we fix the symptoms, but the sports physical therapist also addresses the cause of the symptoms. This ensures that complaints will not recur in the future, or are less likely to do so.

Treatment can be either in the treatment room by massaging or stretching muscles, improving movement of a joint, or exercise therapy is tailored to the load capacity of the affected tissue and athlete. Exercises are tailored to sport-specific abilities. For example, treatment for a runner will look different than for a police officer, even though they have the same injury.

''I had been running with a nasty injury for a while. Seen many practices, which helped me in the short term, but unfortunately did not resolve my complaint in the long term. Now that I've been at Work With Care for a while, I finally notice significant improvements for the first time. Very happy with it! Thanks for your help!''

"After right shoulder complaints from strength training, I was well helped by a physical therapist. He had helped me a lot to regain mobility and flexibility in my rotator cuff. Because of the exercises the physiotherapist had given me as a warm up. I can now go into my workout complaint free. This company is definitely recommended and you get good advice and guidance from people who know what they are talking about. They also motivated me to start Calisthenics."
